PowerBook adds combo drive
ONE DAY! I have the Powerbook ONE DAY before this news hits. Just goes to show I’m right when I talk about how rotten my luck is. Although this is encouraging:
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company also unveiled an upgrade program for owners of new PowerBooks released in October. Starting in mid-January, those Mac owners will be able to upgrade their notebooks’ DVD drive or CD-rewritable drive to a combo unit for $299.
…and that’s pretty much all she wrote for the wireless networking, because that money is now going to the upgrade.

Well, so much for wireless…for now.
Apple tech support helped me get the AirPort base station reset, but I’m still not getting the speed that I’d like out of it. So it’s back to the wire for right now. Oh well. Technology can be our friend or our foe. It just seems like my foe more often than not lately. (I’m talking to YOU, Color LaserJet 5. Your ass is MINE.)

Otherwise, the new PowerBook is working quite nicely. I’ve started loading on more software, and I hope to be able to dismantle the old computer by the weekend. (My desk space reclaimed! Huzzah!)

Fun With Computers
Ugh. This has not been a good day.

For the last few days, I’ve noticed that my blog wasn’t showing me my posts from Friday. Blogger wouldn’t let me in, and when I was finally able to re-load the page, it lost the comments from the last few posts (for reasons that I have not yet been able to deduce.)

To compound things, I got my new computer yesterday, and since I had many errands to run, I left it until today to set up. After problems with my old CD-RW (which caused me to burn 5 coasters taking about 40 minutes each), I foolishly attempted to set up the AirPort network for my Powerbook.

Now, switching data from one computer to another is something I’ve done more than a few times. I expected it to take the better part of the day, but I figured that by the time “Alias” came on, I would be in pretty good shape, and I could, say, start experimenting with MacOS X. Well, that all went to shit, because first AirPort wouldn’t give me the throughput that I wanted, and then the base station just sort of…well, disappeared…entirely. At about midnight, I got fed up, disconnected the base station and restored the ethernet connection to my old computer.

With any luck, I’ll have time to call Apple after work tomorrow (but before my Post-Mortem meeting in Brooklyn tomorrow night) and find out how the hell I screwed this “simple” procedure up.

I say again: “Ugh.”

So in honor of that last item, and mainly because I can’t resist taking a pot shot at Ms. Spears, it’s time, once again, to play…

And I’m spent.
“Seven Keys” is now officially in the record books. And yet, somehow, I’m still not DONE with it. The final performance was yesterday, but now we face the task of striking the massive set that be built for this thing. As you may or may not recall, it took the better part of one week to put the set up and get it into shape. With the aid of circular saws and sledgehammers, it should take substantially less time to strike, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s going to be a bear of a strike.
