{"id":779,"date":"2007-05-21T21:37:42","date_gmt":"2007-05-22T02:37:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.m-dnovember.com\/?p=779"},"modified":"2007-05-21T21:37:42","modified_gmt":"2007-05-22T02:37:42","slug":"m-d-watches-the-season-finales-heroes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.m-dnovember.com\/?p=779","title":{"rendered":"M-D Watches the Season Finales:  &quot;Heroes&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think this is the finale I&#8217;ve been looking forward to the most.\u00a0 When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbc.com\/Heroes\/\">Heroes<\/a> premiered back in September, I remember liking it, but not feeling like I&#8217;d end up staying with it for very long.\u00a0 (At the time, I was higher on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbc.com\/Studio_60_on_the_Sunset_Strip\/\">Studio 60<\/a>&#8230;but that&#8217;s for another post.)\u00a0 But Heroes has delivered something that &#8211; for my money, anyway (your mileage may vary) &#8211; hasn&#8217;t been in episodic television since season 1 of <a href=\"http:\/\/us.imdb.com\/title\/tt0285333\/\">Alias<\/a>, or the early days of <a href=\"http:\/\/us.imdb.com\/title\/tt0118276\/\">Buffy<\/a>&#8230;well developed characters, superb storytelling, and all-around satisfying TV that hasn&#8217;t been dumbed-down in order to cast a wide net.\u00a0 Sure, like all episodic TV, some episodes were stronger than others (without a doubt, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.televisionwithoutpity.com\/articles\/content\/a12865\/\">&#8220;Company Man&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.televisionwithoutpity.com\/articles\/content\/a13047\/\">&#8220;Five Years Gone&#8221;<\/a> are standouts from season 1), but there was no filler here, no weak episodes; only &#8216;strong&#8217;, &#8216;stronger&#8217;, and &#8216;holy living fuck!&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>So, enough with the preliminaries.\u00a0 Time to get on with Chapter 23:\u00a0 &#8220;How to Stop an Exploding Man&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>9:00 PM Eastern<\/strong><br \/>\nPreviously on Heroes, A LOT OF SHIT HAPPENED.\u00a0 Seriously, I&#8217;m glad they didn&#8217;t try to do a traditional &#8220;previously on&#8221; for this episode, because it would have to be almost as long as the episode itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:01<\/strong><br \/>\nLinderman shoots DL &#8211; the thing that I was left wondering&#8230;oh, never mind. Niki just asked the question for me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:03<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;Your last thought!&#8221;\u00a0 BOO-YAH, HRG!<br \/>\nHey &#8211; Greg Grunberg made it through this whole season!\u00a0 That must be some kind of record for a non-JJ Abrams show.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:05<\/strong><br \/>\nHave I mentioned lately how awesome George Takei is?\u00a0 Masi Oka too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*ad break*<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;Fantastic Four 2&#8221; looks a lot better than the first film (from the trailers, anyway).\u00a0 I suppose that&#8217;s to be expected, since the first movie was saddled with the origin story.\u00a0 I wonder what they could have done with the first movie if they had skipped the origin story and just cut straight to the action?\u00a0 I guess we&#8217;ll never know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:08<\/strong><br \/>\nNathan looks like he could use a Zantac.<br \/>\nTime to start playing &#8220;What is Mother Petrelli hiding?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:10<\/strong><br \/>\nRichard Roundtree?\u00a0 SHAFT!\u00a0 (Daaaaamn right.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:12<\/strong><br \/>\nAnyone think we&#8217;ll actually find out HRG&#8217;s first name tonight?<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:15<\/strong><br \/>\nHey, Peter &#8211; can you read my mind?\u00a0 Because I&#8217;m practically screaming &#8220;Remember what Claude taught you!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>*ad break*<\/strong><br \/>\nDoes the Olive Garden really expect us to believe that they have a cooking school in Italy?<br \/>\nThe less said about this Red Bull ad with the two dogs, the better.<br \/>\nHey!\u00a0 That Lexus is stuck in the Prison Rings from &#8220;Superman&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:19<\/strong><br \/>\nI know that Molly&#8217;s been &#8216;in&#8217; since the very first episode, but does anyone\u00a0 think that her ability is a little too convenient?\u00a0 But I know &#8220;Molly Walker&#8221; isn&#8217;t an anagram for &#8220;deus ex machina&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:22<\/strong><br \/>\nHRG has a plan.\u00a0 Is he a cylon?\u00a0 (Oh, wrong show.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:23<\/strong><br \/>\nLucky for Peter this is &#8216;backlot New York&#8217;, and there&#8217;s no one on the streets on the Upper East Side in early evening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:25<\/strong><br \/>\nOK&#8230;who&#8217;s feeding Peter these images?<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:27<\/strong><br \/>\nWhaaaaa?<\/p>\n<p><strong>*ad break*<\/strong><br \/>\nSomething just occurred to me &#8211; did they say Isaac&#8217;s apartment was on the Lower East Side, near Reade Street?\u00a0 Either they&#8217;ve renamed some streets in NYC, or someone on the writing staff doesn&#8217;t know Manhattan as well as they thought they did.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:31<\/strong><br \/>\nThis wasn&#8217;t one of Ando&#8217;s better ideas.<br \/>\nHuh.\u00a0 Syler can do the Chokie Roberts!<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:32<\/strong><br \/>\nIf I didn&#8217;t know better, I think Hiro just &#8216;served&#8217; Syler.\u00a0 Now all he has to do is kill him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:33<\/strong><br \/>\nWait &#8211; how could Candace know about DL?\u00a0 Or&#8230;?\u00a0 Naaaah.\u00a0 Couldn&#8217;t be.\u00a0 Could it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:36<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Petrelli&#8217;s pitch to Claire sounds an awful lot like they&#8217;re trying to tempt her over to the Dark Side.<br \/>\nI suppose it would have been a little cliche for Claire to scream &#8220;I REGRET NOTHING!!!&#8221; on the way down&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>*ad break*<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;Transformers&#8221; &#8211; I just don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 On the one hand, I know that it&#8217;s Michael Bay, which is almost a guarantee of &#8216;noisy&#8217; and &#8216;brainless&#8217;.\u00a0 But on the other hand, Transformers were my absolute favorite toys when I was a kid, and I&#8217;m damn curious.<br \/>\nShawn White &amp; Carrot Top: Separated at birth?\u00a0 (Also, how much does he spend on his AmEx card that he has THAT MANY points to use on air travel?)<br \/>\nI like this Audi commercial for two reasons:\u00a0 1) the rip on Lexus, and 2) the Elwood Blues-style parallel parking.\u00a0 Man, I wish I could do that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:41<\/strong><br \/>\nHuh.\u00a0 So despite the psyche-out last week, I guess that IS Candace&#8217;s real form.\u00a0 (One would presume that if it weren&#8217;t, she wouldn&#8217;t have reverted to it when Niki knocked her the hell out.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:44<\/strong><br \/>\nYes, Hiro DOES look bad ass.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:45<\/strong><br \/>\nShaft lays down the wisdom on Peter.\u00a0 For a second, I thought we were gonna need a montage&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:47<\/strong><br \/>\nEveryone remember, 22 episodes ago, when we thought HRG was the big bad?<br \/>\nNOAH!!!!!!!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:48<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Junior Division to the rescue!<br \/>\nOooh.\u00a0 That can&#8217;t be good for HRG&#8217;s spine.<br \/>\nHeeeeeere&#8217;s Gabriel!\u00a0 One more break, and it&#8217;s time for Endgame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*ad break*<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;Shrek the Third&#8221;: still not enough for Eddie Murphy to redeem himself after &#8220;Norbit&#8221;.<br \/>\nMore &#8220;FF2&#8221; &#8211; if nothing else, Silver Surfer is pretty bad ass.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:52<\/strong><br \/>\nWitty repartee, and Syler goes right for the Chokie Roberts.<br \/>\nAw, hell.\u00a0 Remember what I said about Grunberg?<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:54<\/strong><br \/>\nAlright Hiro!\u00a0 Kansai!\u00a0 (Or whatever.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:55<\/strong><br \/>\nReally, Peter?\u00a0 Is this the time for a Ben Stiller impression?<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:56<\/strong><br \/>\nMan, even in the last episode, they can&#8217;t let that catchphrase go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:59<\/strong><br \/>\nWHAT?\u00a0 Syler got away?<\/p>\n<p><strong>10:00<\/strong><br \/>\nVolume Two?\u00a0 Wha?\u00a0 (Oh&#8230;right.\u00a0 Never mind.)<br \/>\nOh.\u00a0 well, that answers my question about what happens to Hiro.\u00a0 It also explains how Hiro ends up with an unbroken sword.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s so much detail to analyze here, I&#8217;m going to have to watch this episode at least one more time to get the full benefit.\u00a0 But creator Tim Kring was on record that Volume (season) 1 would have a satisfying ending, and that Volume 2 would be set up in the finale &#8211; and oh, mama, did he deliver.<\/p>\n<p>A quick note about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesimpsons.com\/index.html\">The Simpsons<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.familyguy.com\/\">Family Guy<\/a> &#8211; I ended up going over to my parent&#8217;s house for dinner last night, and didn&#8217;t get back until late, so I didn&#8217;t watch the episodes live.\u00a0 I did TiVo them, however, and while they were both funny (although I think the &#8220;24&#8221; episode of The Simpsons was actually funnier than the finale\/episode 400), I think I&#8217;d have the same problem that I had with Scrubs &#8211; too many gags, not enough time. \u00a0 So that&#8217;s that.<\/p>\n<p><em>Next time on M-D Watches&#8230;:\u00a0 a probable TiVo-assisted double-header &#8211;
